Per 1 januari voert Mongolië weer een visumplicht in voor Nederlandse en Belgische reizigers. Dit betekent dat reizigers die de Transsiberië Express en de Transmongolië Express willen een visum nodig hebben. Voor 2014 kende Mongolië ook een visumplicht. Voor de Transmongolië Express heeft u dus drie visa nodig. Het Mongools visum kost € 60. U kunt het visum zelf aanvragen in Brussel. Transsit visum Mongolië:
Een transsit visum is maximaal 10 dagen geldig. Het transsit visum is bestemd voor een doorreis naar een ander land. Voor treinreizigers geldt dat een transit visum kan worden aangevraagd als men in de trein door het land reist. U mag met dit visum dus geen tussenstop in Ulaanbaatar maken. Een toeristen visum is nodig als men de treinreis onderbreekt om en of meerdere dagen in een stad te verblijven. De kosten voor een transsit visum zijn iets lager; een regulier toeristenvisum voor Mongolië kost € 60 (2019) en een transit met één keer binnenreizen kost € 40 (2019).

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that they will not be renewing the visa exemptions of 42 countries due to safety issues related to the ASEM Summit in 2016. The Mongolian government exempts entrance visas for passport holders from 42 countries. Citizens from these 42 countries, including Austria, Andorra, Argentina, Denmark, Great Britain, Iceland, Spain, and Italy, are allowed to travel for 30 days in Mongolia without a visa until December 31, 2015. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it will not be renewing this policy due to safety concerns for the guests of next year’s ASEM Summit, which will be hosted in Ulaanbaatar. Additionally, Mongolia will soon be serving as the head of the International Institution for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in Stockholm, Sweden, as Mongolia is considered an experienced nation that transitioned to democracy peacefully. IDEA aims to aid and give advice to countries that are transitioning to a democratic system, and supports the formation of newly democratic nations. Mongolia joined IDEA in 2010. The Mongolian President will be accepting his responsibility as head of the institution at a IDEA meeting being held from November 25 to 27.
